Hot Rods Offense Pounds South Bend 10-3

Bowling Green, KY - The Hot Rods pounded out ten runs on fourteen hits on Sunday afternoon, routing the South Bend Silver Hawks by a 10-3 final. The win gives Bowling Green (22-16) another series victory as they take three of four from South Bend (16-22). They have won five of six home series to move into a tie with Lansing for second place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.

The Hot Rods jumped out to another early lead scoring in the first inning for the second time in the series. Cody Rogers tripled into the gap in right center, scoring quickly when Derek Dietrich laced a single the opposite way to make it 1-0.

After the Silver Hawks tied it in the second, the Hot Rods pulled ahead with a two-run third. Rogers began the frame with a single before scoring on a triple by Kevin Kiermaier to make it 2-1 in favor of Bowling Green. It was 3-1 a few batters later when Phil Wunderlich lofted a sac fly to center to plate Kiermaier.

South Bend would add a solo run in the fourth against Enny Romero, eventually knocking out the Hot Rods starter after just 3.2 innings. Romero walked seven, a new team record, but gave up just two runs on two hits.

After South Bend tied it with a home run against Nate Garcia, the Hot Rods busted the game open in the sixth. Todd Glaesmann began the frame with a double, followed by one-out walks from Steve Tinoco and Kyle Holloway. With the bases loaded, Hector Guevara lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Hot Rods on top 4-3. Rogers followed with a single to make it 5-3 before Kiermaier hit his second triple of the game to put the Hot Rods on top 7-3.

The seventh and eighth innings belonged to Phil Wunderlich. His seventh home run extended the margin to 8-3 in the seventh; a two-run double in the eighth capped the scoring for Bowling Green at 10-3.

All told, the top four members of the Hot Rods order provided most of the damage on the day. Rogers had his second four-hit day in a Hot Rods uniform, scoring all four times he reached base. Kiermaier went 3-5 with three RBI, scoring twice himself. Derek Dietrich singled home his 25th run of the season before drawing a walk in the fifth. Wunderlich ended the day with two hits and four RBI, pushing him into the Midwest League lead with 31 RBI on the season.

Jimmy Patterson earned the win with three shutout innings, improving to 3-0 on the season. Chris Rearick threw a scoreless ninth to wrap up the series.
