A modern-day mystic who coined the term “sacred activism” as the best hope for a troubled world will give three presentations in Rapid City May 20-22.
Andrew Harvey, author, spiritual teacher and world-renowned Rumi scholar, has taken deep journeys in the mystical traditions of many of the world’s major religions.
He will share what he’s learned with Rapid City audiences during “A Weekend with Andrew Harvey” that begins at 7 p.m. Friday, May 20, at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn with Harvey’s readings of the poetry of Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet whom he calls “the greatest mystical poet of the world and a great universal prophet of love whose message transcends all religious messages.”
On Saturday, May 21, Harvey will present “The Journey of Divine Love,” a daylong workshop at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on the power of Rumi’s sacred writings to awaken hearts and ignite a spiritual fire within people.
“This is a difficult and dangerous time in which we are invited to put love into action on every level of the world, and Rumi is an indispensable guide on how to enact that love,” Harvey said. “A return of his vision and poetry to us at this moment is a major inspiration for us as we go through one of the difficult moments in history.”
The film “In the Fire of Grace,” which Harvey made with Persian dancer Banafsheh Sayyad, will demonstrate the sacred Sufi dance form of whirling dervishes that believes music and movement are central to freeing the human spirit.
On Sunday, May 22, Harvey will discuss “Sacred Activism and the World Crisis” from 10 a.m. to noon at the Black Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Canyon Lake Senior Center.

It has been almost 3 years since I began my love affair with the poetry of Rumi and Hafiz. Rumi, a Sufi poet, and Hafiz, a Persian lyrical poet, focused on subjects such as devotion, the beloved, faith, and exposing hypocrisy. Many a sleepless and confusing night, Hafiz and Rumi showed me the way. My first Hafiz purchase was “The Gift”. Later I learned that Persians use Hafiz as a kind of oracle. They ask Hafiz a question and open to one of his poems randomly to get their “answer”. I started to take to this habit and found myself being constantly enlightened and, at times, even moved to tears by the words on the page.
This weekend my own beloved leaves for Austria where we shall be separated indefinitely. I find myself reaching for Hafiz asking for guidance. How shall our love survive and grow over this time and distance?
