Two Sumter Schools One Win Away From Titles
Sumter, SC (WLTX) --- It was a good night for two baseball teams in Sumter County as each won their opening game of their respective best-of-three championship series.
The Sumter Gamecocks defeated Byrnes 11-0 in five innigs behind the pitching of future USC signee Jordan Montgomery who allowed just one hit. He got the better of Byrnes starter Daniel Gossett, a Clemson signee, who was roughed up by the Sumter batters. Gossett entered the game with an ERA that hovered below 1.0 run for most of the year.
Sumter will look to close out the series Wednesday night in Duncan.
At Wilson Hall, the Barons opened up the SCISA 3A state championship series with a 9-5 victory over Northwood Academy. The Barons' Zach Sherrill pulled double-duty, starting on the mound and delivering some clutch hitting at the plate.
The Barons will make the trip to North Charleston for a Tuesday night showdown on Northwood's home field. A win gives the Barons the state championship.

Sumter County Sheriff Bill Farmer announced on Thursday phase two of an initiative to protect children from online dangers and Internet predators.
The first part was an undercover Internet sex sting in March, in which investigators posed as teenagers, lured predators to Sumter County and arrested them.
Farmer described it as a “Dateline NBC”-style sex sting.
Suspects contacted detectives to meet and have unlawful sexual contact with minors. In all, 22 people from across the state were arrested.
The number of arrests showed investigators the extent of the problem with sexual predators and to continue with their operation.
Phase two is “Computer Cop,” software that parents install on their computer that lets them track their child’s Internet and social website search history.
“Parents must be extra vigilant in knowing what is happening in their children’s ‘online lives,’ and the Internet can be a dangerous place for children and teenagers if left unsupervised,” Farmer said.
Toward that goal, the sheriff’s office is working with the Sumter County School District, which will help distribute a free copy of “Computer Cop” to all parents who have middle- or high-school children, said Lt. Bobby Caruthers.
“Cybercrime puts our children and community at risk,” said school Superintendent Rick Shirley. “Sexual predators roam the Internet daily. We appreciate the opportunity to work with the sheriff’s office to help protect our students.”
Sheriff’s officials emphasize to parents that their children’s best online protection is parents. By talking to them about potential online dangers and monitoring their computer use, you’ll help them use the Internet safely, Caruthers said.
