JCPenney survives Palm Beach Mall's unraveling

On Friday, the large red and white message went up on two mall marquees that once also promoted Sears, Macy's and Dillard's.

The mall shed stores as plans for a renovation faded and Simon Property Group let the center go into foreclosure. Only JCPenney and the George's Music Musician's Superstore remain.

JCPenney store manager Kim Winter said that while regulars knew of the store's stalwart presence, vacant parking lots and shuttered shops may have led others to believe that the Texas-based retailer also had shut down. He said there has been an increase in customers and sales since the signs went up.

"One of the advantages of a mall is the collection of different stores brings different people and potentially more traffic to your store," said Tim Lyons, a spokesman for JCPenney. "Us being there by ourselves, we don't want people to forget we are there and that the store isn't going anywhere."

Most of the mall is controlled by Japanese financial servicer ORIX Capital Markets. Macy's and Dillard's are the only companies that own their own "pads."

Ed Smith, vice chairman of ORIX USA, said the company is trying to sell the 90-acre property along Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and Interstate 95.

"We're talking to a number of people who are interested," Smith said. "I'm glad JCPenney can stay open."

So is shopper Arlene Maki, 79, who splits her time between Wisconsin and Lake Worth.

The only credit card Maki has is a JCPenney card, she said.

On Tuesday, she browsed JCPenney and expressed a sentimental attachment to the retailer, which traces its roots back to 1902 when it was founded in Wyoming by James Cash Penney. Originally called the Golden Rule store, it became the J.C. Penney Company in 1913.

"I just like to come here and look sometimes," Maki said. "This is home."
